Capital City Market Opens in Downtown Lansing

This 37,000-square-foot store opened Oct. 14 in the BLOCK600 development at Michigan Ave and Larch St., featuring bakery items, Meijer products, national brand offerings from Meijer, and an estimated 3,000 local artisan offerings.

What to Expect

Whether it’s your first or fifth visit, this open-air public marketplace promises an array of local products from over 150 vendors, offering everything from fresh produce to jewelry stalls. Most vendors accept credit cards, while some prefer cash-only transactions; don’t forget your reusable bags! Pet-friendly events must remain leashed and under control at all times during market events.

Lansing’s first downtown grocery store, Capital City Market by Meijer, officially opened to the public Wednesday. This new market includes a cafe area staffed by Ferris Coffee Company and a full sushi bar. Furthermore, this market offers an assortment of Michigan products and requires shoppers to wear masks while shopping.

Food & Drink

Lansing’s anticipated downtown grocery store finally opened on Wednesday! Capital City Market by Meijer features 37,000 square feet and is part of BLOCK600 development near Michigan Avenue and Larch Street in Lansing. Their neighborhood market delivers fresh foods in an easily accessible setting.

As well as offering Meijer and national brand products, this store will showcase thousands of locally made artisan goods. This selection showcases the talent and hard work of small businesses and entrepreneurs in the local community.

Laura Romito of High 5 Salts is among those businesses that have joined forces with the new neighborhood market in Lansing. With her husband in East Lansing, they produce these kosher and vegan salts using only natural ingredients and organic products whenever possible – Laura said she was overjoyed that people could find and learn about their products here!

Goodfellas Bagel Deli is another new business that has joined Capital City Market to form an exciting partnership: located just a block away; they specialize in serving delicious sandwiches on high-quality bagels sourced locally, such as Cochran Bros’ bagels. Although this deli also operates locations in Grand Rapids and Holland, its offerings will be exclusive at Capital City Market.

The new store also features a Ferris coffee shop complete with a fully functioning coffee and espresso bar; beer, wine, and liquor counter with a rolling ladder; an expansive international food aisle featuring eight ethnic backgrounds including Middle Eastern, Kosher, Hispanic, European and Asian; inspired by local culture found within downtown’s Stadium District; open-air elements include six garage-style doors that can be opened during warmer months for outdoor fresh produce and floral area;

Meijer’s Capital City Market store features more than 70 employees. It offers free parking behind it off either Michigan Ave or Larch St. To give back to the community, Meijer made donations of $3,000 each to Allen Street Neighborhood Center, Salus Center, Impression 5 Science Center, All of the Above Hip Hop Academy and Friends of Lansing Regional Trails before launching Capital City Market.

The Market began as an outdoor farmers market on 8th Street in downtown Boise in 1994. Operating initially from spring through fall, in 1998, it relocated to Grove Plaza and has become a year-round attraction. Over time, it has evolved into a thriving community hub and local business incubator open on Saturdays from April through December.

Capital City Market, Lansing’s inaugural downtown grocery store, is located at 600 East Michigan Avenue within the BLOCK600 development. This project also houses 40 apartments above it and an anticipated hotel set to open next year.

Meijer recently unveiled its 37,000-square-foot neighborhood grocery store, offering customers fresh, local, and convenient food at low prices. It opened Oct 14 in Michigan Ave/Larch St development at BLOCK600 development with an open area cafe encompassing Ferris Coffee Company and Capital City Deli (which features a full sushi bar). Furthermore, six garage-style doors can be opened to create outdoor fresh produce/floral areas during warmer weather.

The grocery store features an expansive selection of Meijer and national brand products and more than 3,500 Michigan-made items. There is also an international food aisle providing options from eight ethnic backgrounds.

Capital City Market offers more than traditional groceries, besides Goodfellas Bagel Deli and bakery offerings. Both provide freshly baked treats and sandwiches, with bulk orders accepted and offering a full menu of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items always on offer – as well as prepared foods like salads and sandwiches with takeout window access available 24/7.

Parking

Capital City Market is a new neighborhood grocery store operated by Meijer that brings fresh food and value to customers in a market-like setting. Situated at Michigan Ave and Larch Street in Lansing’s BLOCK600 development, its 37,000 square-foot Meijer provides much-needed access to fresh items within easy reach for residents living close by who were previously forced to travel out of their way for new grocery needs.

Meijer has designed its design and layout of this store to reflect Lansing’s Stadium District culture and features open-air elements like six garage-style doors, which will open onto outdoor fresh produce and floral areas in warmer months. In addition, Meijer will carry national-brand products and locally made goods from Round Lake Produce, Woody’s Oasis, and Reputation Beverage Company businesses such as Round Lake Produce.
